Adding a Bit of Drama: Evans Collection High Low Hem Top and Ultrastretch Skinny Jeans

And now for something a little different... Evans recently were kind enough to offer me some pieces from their current range to try. It was pretty hard to decide and I spent a good few hours shopping in the Marble Arch flag ship store here in London (the staff are totally brilliant - as they always are in Evans stores - so if you get a chance do pop in!) before I settled on my final picks. They include this gorgeous chiffon top with frill detail and Ultrastretch skinny jeans.

You may have noticed that I have a real thing for dresses. I love the freedom you get to mix and match with separates, but somehow I usually end up gravitating towards the ease of all in one. So when Evans made their offer I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and away from the rails of pretty dresses. But to ease me in, the Collection High Low Hem Top felt like the perfect place to start. I had had my eyes on it since seeing it on the runway at UK Plus Size Fashion week. I love pieces that are effortlessly glam like this.

When I wore this, my friend actually referred to it as 'burlesque western cow girl'. I laughed when she said it, but I kind of love the description and think it is pretty accurate. This is such a dramatic statement piece, and I love that you can really dress it up or down depending on your mood. Here I decided to keep it casual, with jeans and flat pumps. I am all about burgundy as I think it is a really striking colour on fair skin, and there is loads of it around this season which is great.

In store they only had this top available in a size 20, one size down from my usual 22. I tried it on, and while it could be slight roomier across the bust, I quite liked the fit. And I think a 22 may have looked a little too oversized for my taste. In my opinion this is a style that probably works better on taller girls (I myself am 5'8) as I think if you are at the shorter end of the spectrum it may end up making you appear shorter still. Trying this on was interesting for me. A lot of the clothes I wear are designed in a way to really highlight my assets and hide what I am least comfortable with. Skim over the problem areas creating that lusted after hour glass shape. This outfit is in no way unflattering at all (I don't think) however it doesn't create the same silhouette I am used to. And I feel pretty great in it. I feel powerful and striking. It's a bold statement of a piece which says "Look at me, I am here!" and is not attempting to make me look smaller or less there, and I think that is quite an empowering feeling for a plus size woman. It was for me.

I paired this with the Pear Midwash Ultrastretch Skinny Jeans, also from Evans. I, like so many women in the world, have a nightmare finding jeans. I actually do love me some denim, and there have been periods in my life where I have pretty much lived in jeans, but nowadays every time a pair gives up the ghost I groan at the thought of another crusade to find a new pair. Well Evans have a might fine selection. In the past I was put off their denim as I often found their jeans were particularly bad for colour transfer and I would end up with blue legs and stained handbags, however they seem to have rectified this issue, and their range of jeans is super impressive.

I can be a bit of a chaotic shopper, and I was whizzing through the racks of jeans when I happened upon this pair in my size and decided to try them on. I was super suprised to find that they are actually a pear shaped fit. If I had realised that before I never would have tried them on as I would never describe my body as pear shaped. However I do like jeans that sit in my natural waist, and these being made for pear shaped bodies the waist sits high, which I love! I think this has taught me to worry less about labels and just give things a try. These fit a treat! The ultrastretch means they really cling, showing off the shape of legs beautifully. And despite having worn them for an entire day they didn't get all baggy around the thighs, arse and knees - a constant complaint of mine with skinny jeans. It means that in the past I have had to wash them after every wear which I think is so not the point with jeans. I am also a fan of the dark wash, which has a bit of a worn look, and I am happy to say I have had no dye transfer whatsoever.

I really do rather love this outfit. I can't wait to try it out with some heels and big statement necklace for an evening out. What do you think of my foray into the world of separates? Do you ever challenge your own comfort zones? Let me know...

  2. I really love that top! Do you think it would cut a tall girl like me right on the waist? Tops like this have a habit of the seam sitting immediately below my boobs instead of my waist!
