Nice and Nautical: Voodoo Vixen Joni Dress

Voodoo Vixen's plus size collection continues to go from strength to strength, and their nautical themed Joni dress is my new favourite. Once again they have totally won me over with the gorgeous details.

The Joni has cap sleeves and a sweetheart neckline, with a button to the front. The print of the dress is made up of little anchors and wheels, and there is a sort of embroidered trim along the neckline and the bottom of the skirt. The same trim is also along the matching belt. I often find that matching belts seem to be too small, however this one fits perfectly. Looking back on these pictures however I think I would quite like to try this with a wider belt to really draw the waist in further.

Excuse the ridiculousness. Private joke!

I am usually a size 3XL (despite it correlating to a size 24, when my usual size is a 22) in Voodoo Vixen and so that is what I order the Joni in and it fits me well. There is probably room in there for a slightly bigger bust, but the A-line skirt sits comfortably over my tummy, and means I am happy to wear this dress without shapewear. On my 5'8 frame this dress sits over the knee at what I consider to be a flattering length. I am not so keen on things that hit me mid calf as they make me feel a but more frumpy.

In the pictures without the cardigan and in the turquoise cardi, I have got a petticoat on underneath (just a cheap one I bought off eBay) and it really gives the skirt a nice full feel to it, and makes it stand out in a lovely fifties silhouette.

What I love about navy in general is that it is such a great base colour. It's less harsh than black, and can be worn with a myriad of colours. I have included a few pictures of how I have work it with other colours below.

I think the Joni works equally well with either colour, and to me it's one of those great daytime dresses that will work year round, and it can be either smart or casual depending on how you dress it. It's also just another one of those Voodoo Vixen dresses that is quite unique - I have not seen something quite like this by any vintage reproducers that do a plus size collection.

Do you have any Voodoo Vixen dresses? Have you got the Joni dress? What would you like to see more of from Voodoo Vixen? Let me know in the comments...

  6. Hi :) love that dress on you! Thanks so much for the review!
Can I ask a Q? I'm a 1xl in bust but closer to 2xl in waist. Do I go the 2xl and risk a baggy bust or the 1xl and risk bulging uncomfortably at the waist? Is the stretch in the fabric kind to the waistline? Thanks Hun, just thought is ask since your familiar with the dress and the brand :)

    1. Glad you found the review useful :)
I think they run a little small generally so I would always size up as I don't like to feel squished. You may find that with a bit of a padded bra, or by popping some of those silicone inserts into a bra that you fill it quite nicely at the top as well? That would be my suggestion. Hope that helps :)
