Black and Gold: Christmas at Evans

A couple of weeks ago, Georgina (GG) from She Might Be Loved and I spent a day together in London. We lunched, we chatted, we browsed and we were hosted by the lovely team at Evans Marble Arch for an epic afternoon of shopping. The flagship store on Oxford Street was packed with glittering festive fashion and we had a ball trying on just about everything. There were loads of options for casual and work wear, but GG and I being the girls that we are we went straight for the sparkly gorgeousness. We simply could not get enough sequins! From the pieces I came home with I decided to create three looks to get you through the party season. (Make sure to check out GG's post about her haul too.)

A Work Christmas Lunch Look

Tights - Primark

I picked the Black Lace Panel Dress for its simplicity. I really feel like a plus size Audrey Hepburn in this dress, so I decided to pop my hair into a bun to channel her further, and show off the lace yoke. I paired it with black tights here, but I would like to see it with coloured tights or flesh coloured ones, as that would really show off the lace panel in the skirt. Both the yoke and panel are studded with black sequins. To me this is the perfect dress to wear to your work Christmas lunch. Totally appropriate for a day of meetings, but with that little bit of extra sparkle you want at this time of year. I added a skinny belt with gold detail to define the waist a bit more on this standard skater dress. I am wearing this in a 22, and the fit is pretty perfect, but there is certainly not much extra room, so if you're between sizes I would size up.The skirt sits just over my knee (I am 5'8).

In the final picture I am wearing it with the Black Fur Collar Cardigan which adds even more luxury to this outfit. The cardi has pockets (yay) comes to mid thigh. The knit is reasonably light and collar is so soft I spend most of my time rubbing my cheek against it. The collar is detachable, but I am likely to keep mine furred at all times because I adore fur in the winter. GG and I twinned on this dress, so make sure you read her post on it too

The Perfect Party Dress

This gold sequined number is a real show stopper. It has Flash Christmas party or New Years Eve written all over it. Evans is calling it a top, but I think when it's worn with the jersey under layer it is more of dress. This garment comes in two pieces - a sleeveless black jersey dress with a scoop neck underneath, and a mesh tunic covered in gold sequins over the top. When paired together it ends up looking like a straight skirt underneath a sequined top. The straight line of the skirt is really good on those with long legs and narrower hips, and the chunky sequined fabrics means no clinging, so good for big tummies. I loved this when I tried it on in the store, but knew I was going to belt it to give it more of a defined hourglass shape. This wide belt from Primark gives the top an almost peplum shape and really draws the waist in, making this a perfect party dress. It is quite rare to find sequined party wear with sleeves, so I was really happy with the roomy, slouchy ones this piece has. I also like the little mesh edge that has been left free of sequins at the neck and on the sleeves. It's a great detail and stops it from being too scratchy too.

I do love me some sequins, but can sometimes find them a it much and am nervous of looking too disco ball-ish, but these sequins are a slightly dulled old gold, so not too over sparkled and a little more classy. I really do love this dress, and am so pleased to have found a fabulous comfortable sequined show stopper!

A Couple of Festive Drinks at your Local

Black Leggings - Maidenform

Those of you who have been following me for a little while will know that I have a bit of an issue with certain pieces of fashion I feel have been foisted onto plus size women again and again. Two of my pet peeves are tunics and asymmetrical or hanky hems. Now I am not saying that I have changed my mind about these things, but this piece made me break my own rules. This jersey tunic is cut at an angle, with a mesh black sequined overlay, which has also been cut at an angle. This is a simple yet striking feature which works well with the fabrics. I like this top because it can be dressed up or down, and during the festive season I think you can't go wrong with a couple of sparkly tops in your wardrobe that you can throw on for seasonal get togethers with friends, and drinks at your local pub. Here I have paired mine with some thick black leggings, black ankle boots and big gypsy earrings. The boots I bought at Evans last season and they have served me well, and I am glad to see they have a similar pair in this year.

If you want an insight into the insanity that is a day of shopping and hanging out with GG and I then pop on over to YouTube for something that will truly make you giggle (and me cringe a little!). This is my very first tentative step into the world of vlogging, but be prepared for a lot more from me in future. GG put this together brilliantly, and we are both a little ridiculous so do have a little look.

If you are looking for some party essentials this season I would definitely give Evans a visit as they have some really lovely, well cut pieces in store with loads of sequins and shimmer for the silly season. Let me know what you think of their pieces and what wonderful party frocks you have in your wardrobe below! And whatever you do, don't forget to read GG's post all about what she went home with.
