Along with the traditional reds, greens, golds and silvers, midnight blue always feels festive to me. Back in September I reviewed this dress in leopard print, so when I saw Simply Be had released it in midnight blue velvet for Christmas I was over the moon.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you will know that I am fan of flared skirts and dresses. I am not one for body con, but earlier this year when I bought the leopard print version of this dress I started to change my mind. I always liked wiggle style dresses, but my hang ups with my tummy really stopped me from wearing one with confidence. But the fabric and design of this dress is super flattering, and I wear it with such confidence I want one in every colour way. And oh my god there is also a ruby red velvet version!
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars
Blue Velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm a memory through the years
And I still can see Blue Velvet through my tears
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours
Blue Velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm a memory through the years
And I still can see Blue Velvet through my tears
Velvet has long been a friend of the plus sized woman, as the heavy nature of the fabric means that it drapes and flows over the body, and gives a smoother silhouette. This dress has a lining underneath which does the initial smoothing, and then the luxurious velvet sits on top. Obviously velvet is quite a heavy fabric, which is why I am happy that they have gone for three quarter sleeves on this rather than long sleeves. Means you can keep a little cooler! The real pièce de résistance on this dress however, is the little knot that ties to the side, causing drapery across the tummy, and accentuating the waist.
I wore this to my work Christmas party last night, and it was perfect. It’s classy and quite simple, but because of the fabric and the shape I still felt like I was wearing something really special. And I got so many compliments on the colour, the fabric, the shape! And of course velvet is wonderfully tactile so I got stroked a fair bit too – how nice! Merry Christmas indeed!
What have you been wearing this party season? Do you rock a wiggle dress? Are you a velvet fan? Let me know…
Absolutely beautiful! The dress goes amazingly with your hair, and you KNOW I'm a fan of your fabulous figure xxxx
