Long and Layered: Tiered Black Maxi Dress and Wrap Front Tunic from Pink Clove

Some of my plus size blogger sisters are just killer at layering, but it's never something that has come particularly naturally to me. I tend to throw on a dress and a cardi, identify some key accessories, and run out the house. So when the lovely folk at Pink Clove wanted to send me some pieces from their AW collection, I decided to get some stuff that would work well for layering.

Being a newbie at layering, I figured the safest option was to go with some basics – so I opted for a black maxi with a tiered frill, and a burnt orange long line wrap front tunic. Here I have also added a fur wrap that I got for a song at H&M years ago. I liked that it added a bit of drama and luxury to what was quite a simple look otherwise.

This is the first time I have tried a Pink Clove maxi. I have a few dresses from them which I have collected over the years, all in pretty exciting fabrics and they have all been of the short variety. I liked the elasticated waist, that looked like it would fold over quite nicely in a sort of boho, blouson effect, and the maxi skirt with its large bottom frill tier was straight out of my gypsy dreams.

Alas, despite loving the overall style of this Pink Clove maxi, I wasn’t prepared for the sizing issues I would have. Firstly, I didn’t get the impression from the product shot that it was going to be a particularly fitted garment, but it certainly was across my tummy and to a lesser extent my hips (which I consider to be narrow for my size). I initially ordered it in my usual size 22, but it was way too tight so I decided to size up to a 24. I am wearing the 24 in the pictures and felt this was still a bit too tight across the tummy for my liking, but the bust was just about right. As you can see from the photos this style it is also quite long. I am on the tall side at 5’8, and here I was wearing boots with a 2” heel, so the dress is definitely cut on the long side – great news for tall ladies. For me, the sizing on the maxi was decidedly off, when compared say with one of Pink Clove’s shorter dress, and I was a bit disappointed because I think it’s a style I would have been wearing really often if it fitted a little better.

I fared much better with the wrap front tunic. It’s an unusually modern silhouette for me, and I wasn’t sure I would get much use out of it, but I have found it a great little addition to my casual wardrobe. I especially like it with jeans, and I think it would look great over a striped dress (I have one I think might work). I have found it slightly more challenging to pair with a lot of my dresses as most of them are waisted in some way. A longer layering item such as this one looks better with things like maxis or shift dresses.

Overall, it was pretty fun trying out a different look. And I love that brands like Pink Clove are making that more affordable for plus size ladies than ever before. They are perfect for updating your look with a few seasonal attention grabbers, or for trying on a different vibe to your usual look. You can see their latest pieces here.
