Smart Summer Separates: Studio 8's Persia Skirt and Dita Top

This is the first of three posts I am doing with Studio 8, to show you some occasion wear looks for the upcoming season. Summer is always full to bursting with excuses to dress up. Days at the races, at my age every season sees a glut of weddings (I have four this year), regattas, garden parties, work functions. It’s a bit nonstop. Not only does my liver usually take a bit of pounding (you know what I’m talking about!), but my wardrobe works extra hard too.

It used to be that finding something I felt glamourous, smart, pretty or sexy in (maybe all of the above!) was near on impossible. I frequently found myself reaching for a black maxi and trying to do something creative with accessories. YAWN! Don’t get me wrong, I love a staple black maxi, but I would stare enviously as my slimmer friends trotted out in an array of exciting outfits, rocking a different look for each event. However, in the last couple of years some serious players have emerged on the plus size scene, and now there is some real choice around. Brands like Studio 8 are not just creating one or two statement items for the plus size woman’s wardrobe, but actually have a whole collection of occasion wear, meaning you can really find a look that suits you and the occasion. This year I am planning to try out a range of different looks for my summer social engagements, and have some fun with fashion by trying different pieces.

I have recently rediscovered separates. Anyone who has been reading this blog for any length of time will know I am a sucker for a pretty dress, but I love the fun and freedom you can have with separate pieces. So for my first look, I decided to try a monochrome skirt and top duo. One of the problems with occasion wear, is you can often end up feeling like you’ve outlayed a lot of money for something you can’t wear again (or at least not very often!). But with a combo like the Persia Skirt and Dita Top, you have two pieces that are infinitely useable, so they will definitely have much use beyond your event.

Handbag - Thrifted
Shoes - Primark

The Persia Skirt caught my eye the first time I saw it. I love the slightly sixties spot print, in cream and black. The fabric is heavy enough that it stands out in a beautiful shape, yet is not so heavy that it’s too hot to wear. Studio 8 (who are a sister brand to Phase 8) are incredible at sourcing beautiful and unusual fabrics, and paying attention to the important details. Like the fact that the Persia Skirt has a sturdy zip, so no worry that you’re going to bust it when zipping over generous thighs and bellies! I picked this skirt in a 24 – which is really comfortable, it moves about a bit, so in hindsight I should have probably gone for a 22, but I tend to be bigger in skirts, due to my rather big tum. The skirt is lined, and the pleats to the front and back mean it fits well and has a bell like silhouette. This skirt could work with pretty much any colour and would be great to a wedding, works for the office and I think will take you right through into the Autumn.

The Dita Top is just a brilliant black top. The fabric is light and breathable, but does not cling or crease. It has a twist at the bust, which drapes beautifully over the bosoms, and is one of those tops that works well on the busty due to being flattering but not too emphasising, and for those less well-endowed in the boob department, the soft drapes make breasts appear fuller. I am wearing a 22, which fits perfectly and will still have room for someone with bigger boobs than me. This top is going to get a lot of wear I can tell!

I dressed up my pieces with a large beaded flower hair clip from Anthropolgie, and a statement clutch to add a pop of colour. I wore some flat, suede Mary Janes, because to be honest I rarely do heels (other than wedges) and sometimes comfort is the name of the game! I would be totally comfortable wearing this to a wedding, a regatta, or a more formal work event. And I love the fact that the piece I’ve chosen are going to continue to get lots of wear long beyond the event. Excellent!

Keep your eyes on the blog, as I’ve got more Studio 8 occasion wear looks coming up – a maxi dress (perfect for weddings) and a prom dress (just what you need for a day at the races). What have you got coming up this summer?  Have you had a look at Studio 8s collection? Let me know…
