Red Dress of Dreams: Jameela Jamil for Simply Be

I have only one complaint about the Jameela Jamil for Simply Be Midi Dress - that I didn't buy it sooner! Hold onto your hats puddings, this is going to be a rave review!

Red Hair Flowers - Various from Accessorize
Black Leather Belt - Primark (previous season)
Black Suede Wide Fit Shoes - Primark

Earlier this year, when Jameela Jamil launched her collection for plus size brand Simply Be. I'm pretty bad at knowing British TV personalities, so I first came across Jameela Jamil last year when she was on the Great British Bake Off - and I developed an epic girl crush! She is ridiculously beautiful, seems super down to earth, and can pull of the most wonderful shades of lipstick.  Add to that that her Instagram is funny and glam, and she is body positive and slams body shaming whenever she gets the chance. Yes! When the first collection hit, I was overwhelmed by the amount of covetable pieces. There is a star print maxi that is just too wonderful for words, and a sequined cape that my glam heart still dreams about, but the piece that really struck me was a black midi dress accented with dobby mesh. So when it came out in red - well it was fate. Because I can NEVER resist a red dress.

This gorgeous dress is a fit and flare style - always my favoured silhouette. It feels to me like an update on a classic, vintage party dress. The gauzy sleeves offering a hint of flesh, while still retaining modesty is sophisticated and sexy, while the panel of mesh in the skirt is an unusual, and interesting design element making this dress unique. But the true brilliance of this dress - the fit. Goddamn it's designed for curves. The dobby mesh (I love that little polka dot) is super stretchy giving the sleeves a comfortable fit. The ponte is a great quality jersey with a good weight, so it hangs beautifully and no clinging! In my usual size 22 the dress fits perfectly over the bust, nips in at the waist (I added a little black belt to define the waist further) and flares out into a full skirt - perfect for dancing. You could go with a strapless bra, but I just chose a read one already in my lingerie drawer, and I think it looks like it's a part of the dress - so I felt perfectly supported in the boob department.

I wore this dress to a wedding last weekend. Weddings are long days, and if you are in anything uncomfortable and awkward to wear you know straight away. I felt great in this all day. Comfortable, breathable, not too hot. I added a trio of red flowers to my hair (just random ones I have collected over the years, mainly from Accessorize I think), a black leather braided belt, some black suede Mary Jane flats (I have worn heels too often lately and I just wanted to be comfortable!), and finally my gorgeous Woody Ellen Blossom Bag, which just added a gorgeous pop of colour and fun to the whole ensemble.

So what do you think of this dress? Have you tried any of Jameela Jamil's pieces yourself? What have you been falling in love with lately? Let me know...

  2. I have no idea who the designer is but it doesn't matter because the dress is so flattering. It seems pretty good value too as you could style it so many ways.

  3. I love the Jameela pieces at Simply Be, I think they're so feminine and a real modern twist on classic shapes and styles which mean you don't look like you're from the 50's in them! I love that mesh panel section at the bottom of the skirt and this is without doubt "your colour". Love x

    1. I don't mind looking like I'm from the fifties, lol - but I agree! They do a great job of blending the two aesthetics together. Totally in love with this dress!
