Woman In Black: Melissa McCarthy Separates At Evans

The plus size world was abuzz when Melissa McCarthy released her first clothing range earlier this year. In the UK it is sold exclusively by Evans and I was fortunate enough to get to give a couple of pieces a try. I decided to go with classic black in these beautifully made separates.

Melissa's collection is good quality casual wear, with a lot of loose fitting garments and long line layers. This isn't my usual style - you know me, I tend to always over dress and wear fitted pieces. But I was totally seduced by the fine detailing on these two pieces, and knew they would be really useful additions to my wardrobe. I found the fit very generous on this collection. I am usually a size 22, however in the jeans I sized down to a 20 and in the top I went with a size 1XL (the equivalent of a 20/22).

I love this top - it's a simple black cross over really, but the high end embellishments make it special. . The main body of the top is made of a silky, matte fabric which hangs well and doesn't cling. The 3/4 sleeves are made of jersey fabric so the stretch means a good fit and comfort. The crossover is edged with a faux leather strip. This combined with the zip detail on the shoulders gives the top a bit of edge. The clever designers have added a press stud to keep the cross over from gaping open. I think this would also look good left open with a vest underneath. The cut of the top is roomy across the tummy (I could actually do with it a bit smaller, and I do have a big tum) but I couldn't go any smaller as with my broad shoulders and bust I was endanger of of popping the press stud open if I moved too vigorously. Overall I am pretty happy with the fit though.

I am always a sucker for black skinny jeans. They are such a versatile piece of clothing, and I love these ones. Smarter than my usual jeans, they have been upgraded with some fine additional touches. Hidden pockets mean the overall silhouette is really smooth, and the pewter zip and button detail is a great, modern alternative to gold or silver. I feel that they are almost halfway between jeans and trousers and so I would feel completely comfortable wearing these to work. They fit well, and are the perfect length on my 5'8 frame. The waist also comes up over my belly button, and is not in anyway tight. I really feel like these are a great investment as they are truly going to be a wardrobe staple for me.

Above I thought I'd show you the black top worn a little more casually, showing that it is quite versatile. So, did you get your hands on any of the Melissa McCarthy collection? What do you think of it? And are you one for separates or dresses? Let me know...

  3. I really love you in jeans! The top has a bit of a weird design for me, but I think that's just because I'm really not a top person. You're so beautiful.
