First Blush: Sequin Pearl Top from Navabi

We make a lot of rules for ourselves. We put boundaries our own way. I am currently on a course that talks a lot about the limiting belief systems we construct for ourselves, and how we get hemmed in by them. I am unpicking some of those beliefs now, and I'm finding the process most enlightening. It's also hard seeing how many rubbish rules you have put in place for yourself, that are usually based on flawed evidence and are instrumental in holding you back. It's got me thinking about some of the nonsense fashion rules we follow.

Some fashion rules are ones that "they" hand down to us. Ancient commandments about fat girls not wearing stripes, and red not being worn with pink. But there are others that we create for ourselves. For the longest time I have had an abject aversion to pastel hues. Pastels look a bit crappy on my mum, and so I assumed that they'd look crap on me (despite subtle differences in our colouring). Over the last few seasons blush pinks and nudes have been everywhere, and I bemoaned the prettiness of this colour that I just couldn't wear. Then a few weeks ago I was at a fitting event and tried on a blush coloured blazer. The blazer wasn't really my style, but with my titian coloured hair the colour just worked. So now I am on the hunt for as many baby and rosy pinks as I can get my hands on.

Soft Shopper with Removable Clutch - ASOS (in rose gold and blue)

This sequin pearl top from Navabi reminds me of a beautiful pearl. The delicate pink is accented with an art deco style pattern of beading and sequins in gold, peaches and creams. The top has a wide elasticated band to the bottom, perfect for pairing with jeans, and a bit of a boat neck. I asked for it in a 22, which came up pretty snug particularly around the arms so in hindsight I would probably size up to a 24. I wore this outfit to my cousin's 40th birthday party earlier this month. It started in the afternoon, so paired down with skinny jeans this top felt dressed up but not too much. I have to admit, I feel like quite the luxury bitch in this look!

So I have pretty roundly broken my own silly rule. And I am rather pleased with myself. Do you have things you just won't wear but haven't actually tried in ages? Any of your own rules you've been breaking lately? Let me know...

  1. Love this! I'm a big fan of red and pink together, eff those rules. I also love that you've taken a 'dressy' top and make it more casual with jeans and pumps, such a cute look xx
