Red or Dead: A Plus Size Look feat M&S and ASOS

When I was about 15 or 16 I started to realise what colours suited me. I gathered together a little palette that was very much my own. Over the years it's changed quite a bit - colours have come and gone, especially with changed in hair colour. But red has always been a mainstay for me. Red is my power colour. It makes me bolder and braver. Robed in red I can take on the world. So the fact that red is THE colour this season is filling me with all the happiness, and all the power (I am woman, hear me ROAR).

For those who are tentatively wearing red for the first time, or getting back into it after a hiatus you may want to add it slowly to your wardrobe. The odd pop here or there in your accessories - some red boots, a scarlet clutch, a scarf in merlot. But for a seasoned red queen like me, it's all red, or dead.

I love the two different shades of red in the top and skirt contrasting against each other. The top is a proper pillarbox red, while the skirt is a deeper ruby colour. The A-line velvet midi skirt is from M&S (I reviewed the navy version here) and it hits two major trends this season - velvet and red. I now have this skirt in two colourways and am thinking about getting a third because they are comfortable and total luxury, plus really reasonably priced.

The top is actually a dress. Yup. I ordered this Alice and You shift dress from ASOS, because I loved the colour and statement sleeves. But when it arrived it was SO not a shift dress. Nope, it was a really snug fit and super short and just wasn't going to work at all as I'd imaginied. But then I remembered something the wonderful Beth Ditto said, about being creative with fashion. She was talking about shopping in vintage stores growing up, and never being able to find plus sizes and so she's see a gorgeous skirt for a size 8 and turn it into a cape for her. I just love this idea. Mine was nowhere near as creative, but I figured I just loved the statement sleeves (another big trend for AW - tick!), and it's a good heavy fabric for colder weather and it's so short it' basically a tunic. Plus the tightness of it wasn't an issue once tucked into a high waisted skirt. So I just cut the big frill hem of the bottom (didn't even bother to hem, because ain't nobody got time for dat) and voila! Top!

I added some tights because it's now too cold for bare legs alas, some delicious tiered gem drop earrings from ASOS, that are amazing Dynasty level over the top, and some leopard print shoes and a clutch. Because every outfit is better with a pop of leopard. And I felt super fiesty! I wore this to an event a few weeks ago, and felt all kinds of fashionista fabulous, and so I recreated it so I could get some proper snaps for the blog (thanks to the brilliant Kaye of Fordtography).

What do you think? Are you loving the red trend? Too much of a good thing? What's your power colour? Let me know...
